In the spirit of inclusiveness, the National Association of Medical Examiners now has FOUR membership groups. The groups are Fellow, Member, Resident Member, and Affiliate Member.
FELLOWS shall be physician medicolegal death investigators who are either (a) certified in forensic pathology by the American Board of Pathology or its international equivalent as determined by the Board of Directors or (b) prior to 2008 have completed a training program in forensic pathology that is accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education or have been officially "qualified for examination" in forensic pathology by the American Board of Pathology.
MEMBERS shall be physician medicolegal death investigators other than those meeting the criteria designated in the definition of Fellow. The Member category shall include pathologists, forensic pathology fellows, physician medical examiners, and physician coroners at the time of their application.
RESIDENT MEMBERS shall be pathology residents who are involved in pursing a career in any field that would allow Association membership as a “Member.” The “Member” category shall include pathologists, forensic pathology fellows, physician medical examiners, and physician coroners at the time of their application.
AFFILIATE MEMBERS shall be subdivided into the following sub-categories:
- Investigator Affiliates shall be death investigators officially involved in a death investigation system who assist Fellows or Members at the time of their application for membership and members of the United States Army Criminal Investigation Command, United States Air Force Office of Special Investigations, or Naval Criminal Investigative Service who conduct death investigations. They shall be sponsored by a Fellow or Member in accordance with procedures established by the Association and shall work closely with the sponsoring member in the medicolegal investigation of deaths.
- Administrator Affiliates shall be administrators within an official death investigation system. They shall be sponsored by a Fellow or Member in accordance with procedures established by the Association and shall work closely with the sponsoring member in the administration of an office which officially investigates deaths.
- Professional Consultant Affiliates shall be persons having expertise utilized by or affiliated with Fellows or Members in the official investigation of deaths. They shall be sponsored by a Fellow or Member in accordance with procedures established by the Association.
- Support System Affiliates shall be non-consultant support personnel who assist Fellows, Members, other Affiliates or others in performing death investigation or other forensic duties. They shall be sponsored by a Fellow or Member in accordance with procedures established by the Association. Examples of those in this sub-category are autopsy assistants, non-investigator forensic nurses, police crime scene investigators and forensic photographers.
- Trainee Affiliates shall be students beyond high school graduation who are involved in pursuing a career in any field that allows Association membership, as delineated above.
Membership dues are $306 annual and include a one-year subscription to the American Journal of Forensic Pathology and Medicine. Fellows-In-Training and Resident member dues are $152 if they wish to receive the Journal. Membership application includes a non-refundable $50 fee (this fee will NOT be applied to membership dues should the applicant be accepted). Affiliate member dues are $65 annual (no journal subscription) or $217 annual (includes subscription to the American Journal of Forensic Pathology and Medicine. Dues shall be payable on or before January 1st of every year which will include a subscription to the American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology. Dues failed to be paid by January 30th will not receive the benefits of membership.
