State of New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety Division of Criminal Justice State Medical Examiner State of New Jersey is searching for a State Medical Examiner to head the State Medical Examiner’s Office. OVERVIEW The State Medical Examiner must be a well-credentialed, thoroughly experienced visionary who is committed to providing superior medical examiner services to the State of New Jersey. The Office of the State Medical Examiner is part of the Department of Law and Public Safety, Division of Criminal Justice. The State Medical Examiner (SME) has general supervisory authority over the administration and enforcement of the New Jersey State Medical Examiner Act with respect to all county medical examiners. The State Medical Examiner’s responsibilities include supervising the two state run Regional Medical Examiner’s Office. The Regional Medical Examiner Office’s (RMEO) consists of six New Jersey Counties and accounts for over 1/3 of the autopsies performed in New Jersey. The State Medical Examiner also oversees the State Toxicology Laboratory which performs forensic toxicology for the RMEO and other counties and serves as the designated laboratory for the Attorney General’s drug testing program. RESPONSIBILITIES The responsibilities of the State Medical Examiner are vast and include the following duties: · Administer and enforce the State Medical Examiner (SME) Act · Monitor the County Medical Examiner’s Offices for compliance with laws, rules and regulations. · Provide general supervision of County Medical Examiner Offices · Review state-wide autopsy reports as needed · Provide consultation to the County Medical Examiners · Perform autopsies upon request of the County Medical Examiners, the Attorney General, the County Prosecutors or the Courts. · Audit the County Medical Examiner’s Offices · Supervise the State Toxicology Laboratory · Supervise the Newark Regional Medical Examiner Office · Supervise the Woodbine Regional Medical Examiner Office · Promulgate rules and regulations to effectuate the SME Act · Examine and review all skeletons and unidentified remains and body parts. · Determine physician’s eligibility to practice in the State Medical Examiner system. · Represent the State Medical Examiner Office on boards and other agencies. · Review and respond to citizens’ complaints involving County Medical Examiners and Regional Medical Examiner. UNIVERSITY AFFILIATION
The SME will also receive a non-tenured faculty position within the Department of Pathology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Medical School (UMDNJ). The level of appointment will be determined based on candidate’s credentials and agreed upon services to be performed by the candidate as a UMDNJ faculty member. This faculty position is coterminous with appointment as SME. The additional compensation for the faculty position is determined based on candidate’s credentials and the agreed upon services. REQUISITES Candidates must be a graduate of an accredited medical school, must hold or be able to obtain a New Jersey medical license, be certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic and forensic pathology, and have a minimum of ten years of experience practicing forensic pathology in a large medical examiner’s office, with at least three years in a supervisory capacity. Candidates must have substantial experience with homicide investigations, advanced forensics, and court room testimony. Candidates with academic experience in pathology or a related science, and an interest in research, are encouraged to apply. COMPENSATION The State Medical Examiner is a Gubernatorial appointment. Salary is commensurate with qualification and experience.
