Job Title: MEDICAL EXAMINER Class: Exempt Closing Date: Until filled Salary: $150,000 - $170,000 Location: SAINT THOMAS, VIRGIN ISLANDS Agency: DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE Relocation: Up to $6,000 in rental expenses and $3,000 in moving expenses reimbursed after six (6) months The Position: Under the direct supervision of the Attorney General or his designee, the Medical Examiner is the physician responsible for determining cause and manner of death in cases that fall under the Medical Examiner's jurisdiction, performing post mortem examinations and testifying in court proceedings. This position is responsible for overseeing and performing all aspects of autopsy, evaluation of microscopic materials, examination of evidence, photographs and medical records, preparation of written autopsy protocols and preparation for courtroom testimony. Scene visits and investigation may be required. The Medical Examiner's office is a 24 hours a day, 7 days per week operation. Therefore, the Medical Examiner is required to be on-call. Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an approved and accredited school of medicine with three (3) years experience in forensic pathology and/or anatomic/clinical pathology. Potential incumbent must be licensed to practice medicine in the United States or Territory of the United States and hold a current board certification in forensic pathology and/or anatomic /clinical pathology. Manages the operation of the Medical Examiner Division of the Department of Justice in the District of St. Thomas and the District of St. Croix; . Supervises the employees of the Medical Examiner’s office and oversee the contractors engaged therein; . Perform autopsies on bodies of persons who died in the Territory of un-natural and questionable circumstances to include persons who died as a result of violence, criminal activity, or unexplained circumstances; . Conduct investigation and inquiry into the cause of death of persons who die outside of medical facilities . Conduct Medical Examiner inquiries to investigate the causes of death of persons who died outside of medical facilities and of questionable circumstances; . Conduct conferences with family members to explain the cause and manner of death; . Provide educational and informational opportunities through talks and lectures to law enforcement, medical and paramedical groups and other agencies. .
